#9 - Maria Armoudian - The Armenian Genocide
Towards the end of April each year - People throughout Australia, New Zealand and many parts the world gather to commemorate the loss of thousands upon thousands of lives at Gallipoli during the 1915 to 1916 conflict.
A geographical stones-throw away – A lesser known, tragic genocide; an ethnic cleansing of Armenians was talking place - resulting in the loss of over a million Armenian lives and the displacement of countless others. With the recent Anzac commemorations in NZ, and the historic recognition of the Armenian Genocide by US President Biden in mind – I had the privilege to talk with Doctor Maria Armoudian about the genocide, the history of the Armenian people and the recent 2020 conflict in the area known to Armenians as Artsakh. Maria is of Armenian American descent and is a politics lecturer at the University of Auckland. She is also a published author, broadcaster, musician, and journalist.
